Director Byun Sung-hyun Unveils Inspiration Behind Netflix Film ‘Good News’
Director Byun Sung-hyun of the Netflix original film ‘Good News’ has revealed the background behind drawing inspiration from a real-life incident for his latest project.
The press conference for ‘Good News,’ which has been invited to the competition section of the 30th Busan International Film Festival, was held on the morning of October 19th at the Busan Cinema Center in Haeundae-gu, Busan. Director Byun Sung-hyun, along with actors Sol Kyung-gu, Hong Kyung, and Takayuki Yamada, were in attendance.
‘Good News’ depicts the peculiar operation of people who gathered to land a hijacked airplane by any means necessary in the 1970s. The film is based on the actual hijacking of Japan Air Lines Flight 351, which occurred in 1970.
Director Byun explained, "Although it's based on a true story, it is ultimately about the outcome. I created the process within the scope of not harming the facts," he stated. He also mentioned that he initially found the incident itself to be a comedic situation. "When a film is labeled 'black [comedy],' I believe it needs to possess sharpness along with simply providing amusement."
Furthermore, Byun added, "Although this incident happened in the 70s, in my mind, I felt I could tell a story reflecting the current times," he said. ‘Good News’ is scheduled for release on October 17th.
Director Byun Sung-hyun is known for his distinct cinematic vision and has garnered critical acclaim for his previous works. His storytelling often combines compelling narratives with a unique perspective. 'Good News' is expected to further showcase his directorial prowess.
