MBC has officially announced the discontinuation of its freelance weathercaster system, introducing a new in-house position called 'Meteorological Climate Specialist.' This move aims to bring weather and climate information experts under direct employment.

The newly established 'Meteorological Climate Specialists' will not only perform traditional weather reporting duties but also be involved in news gathering, on-air appearances, and content creation, offering viewers more professional and comprehensive meteorological and climate insights.

Recruitment for these positions will be conducted through open public applications, expected to take place either late this year or early next year. Eligibility criteria include majors in meteorology, climate, or environmental science, relevant certifications, or at least five years of experience in related fields. Former freelance weathercasters are also welcome to apply.

However, the reform has drawn criticism from civic groups 'Ending Credit' and 'Jikjang-gapjil 119,' who protested outside MBC headquarters, labeling the decision as an attempt to disregard the deceased's status as a worker. The bereaved family also expressed concerns about the creation of a new competitive structure rather than direct conversion to permanent employment.

This comes after the late weathercaster Oh Yo-an-na tragically passed away last year, having reported workplace harassment. While a special labor inspection by the Ministry of Employment and Labor concluded that workplace bullying occurred, Oh's status as a freelancer prevented her legal recognition as a worker. MBC had previously stated its commitment to rigorously accepting the findings and making every effort to improve its organizational culture and prevent recurrence.

MBC's decision to transition from freelance weathercasters to in-house 'Meteorological Climate Specialists' signifies a significant shift in its approach to weather broadcasting. The new role expands responsibilities beyond reporting to include research and content development. This initiative aims to enhance the professionalism and depth of weather and climate information provided to the public.
