Acclaimed director Park Chan-wook has expressed hope for Korean cinema with his latest film, 'It Cannot Be Helped,' amidst challenging times for the industry.

The film's press conference, held at the Busan Cinema Center for its opening night selection at the 30th Busan International Film Festival (BIFF), saw director Park alongside stars Lee Byung-hun, Son Ye-jin, Park Hee-soon, Lee Sung-min, and Yeom Hye-ran.

'It Cannot Be Helped' tells the story of Man-soo (played by Lee Byung-hun), a white-collar worker who, after being laid off, embarks on his own battle to find new employment. The film had previously garnered international attention with its official invitation to the competition section of the 82nd Venice International Film Festival.

Director Park commented on the audience's potential connection to the film, stating, "Rather than thinking about the lives of filmmakers, audiences will likely relate it to their own professions." He added, "Just as the act of making paper might not seem extraordinary, but it's everything to the protagonist, I found it relatable as someone who makes films."

He further elaborated on the value of filmmaking, saying, "Cinema might be seen as mere 2-hour entertainment, not a grand lesson. However, we pour our entire lives into it, which is why I think people can easily empathize."

Addressing the current slump in Korean film, Park offered words of encouragement. "It's true that the film industry is facing difficulties, and Korea's situation is tougher than some other countries," he acknowledged. "But I don't believe this state will last forever. I hope this film can play a role in helping us climb out of this rut."

'It Cannot Be Helped' is set to officially premiere on the 24th.

Park Chan-wook is a world-renowned South Korean film director celebrated for his distinctive visual style and compelling narratives. His body of work has garnered critical acclaim and numerous awards at prestigious international film festivals, including Cannes and Venice. 'It Cannot Be Helped' is anticipated to be another significant contribution to his acclaimed filmography, carrying a message of resilience.
