Kim Go-eun Expresses Willingness to Accompany Friend for Assisted Death Abroad
Actress Kim Go-eun has revealed her stance on a friend's request for assisted death, stating she would accompany them if asked, drawing from her experiences in the Netflix drama ‘The Bequeathed’.
In a recent interview, Kim Go-eun shared her deep empathy for the two farewells experienced by her character, Eun-jung, in the series. Regarding the sudden death of Cheon Sang-hak, she commented, "It must have been too sudden and inexplicable for young Eun-jung," suggesting that the character would have had many unspoken words for the departed.
She further elaborated on Sang-yeon's death, noting, "She had more time to process and a degree of control, making it different from a sudden death." Kim Go-eun understood Eun-jung's resolve not to show tears when leaving for Switzerland.
When asked if she would accompany a friend for assisted death in Switzerland, Kim Go-eun responded without hesitation, "I think I would go." She recalled her six years living with her grandmother, with whom she shared a profound, friend-like bond. Although she couldn't be present at her grandmother's final moments, the memory of staying by her side and hearing her last wishes holds significant meaning for her.
Kim Go-eun concluded, "Of course, it's sad to recall, but there are more good memories, and the feeling of having accompanied them well in their final moments is comforting." She believes that, like the story of ‘The Bequeathed,’ which focuses on the emotions of those left behind, one would feel, in retrospect, that it was the right choice. ‘The Bequeathed’ was released on Netflix on the 12th.
Kim Go-eun lived with her grandmother for six years during the filming of 'Cheese in the Trap,' developing a close relationship akin to friendship. Her grandmother's dying words encouraged her to live a life of giving. This personal experience deeply informed her portrayal of the character in 'The Bequeathed'.
