
Popular Mukbang YouTuber Sanghaegi Arrested for Refusing Breathalyzer Test and Fleeing
Shockwaves are rippling through the online community following reports that Sanghaegi (real name Kwon Sang-hyuk), a popular mukbang YouTuber with 1.65 million subscribers, was arrested as a fugitive after refusing a breathalyzer test and attempting to flee.
The Seoul Songpa Police Station stated on the 23rd that they responded to a suspected drunk driving call around 3:40 AM on the 21st in Songpa-gu. The individual, identified as a man in his 30s referred to as 'Mr. A,' ignored the order to stop and drove for approximately 300 meters before being apprehended. Mr. A is known to be a prominent creator with a large subscriber base.
As the news broke, speculation rapidly spread across online communities and social media, identifying 'Mr. A' as Sanghaegi. Sanghaegi's personal social media accounts and channel comment sections were inundated with questions about the alleged drunk driving incident, pleas for denial, and demands for an explanation. His Instagram account has since been deleted.
Sanghaegi began his career as an AfreecaTV BJ in 2018 and expanded to YouTube in 2019, establishing himself as a successful mukbang creator. He also launched his own potato fry brand, 'Brishal Fry,' which opened about 30 franchise locations nationwide, and ventured into the pub and meal kit businesses, earning recognition as an 'entrepreneurial YouTuber.' However, he faced controversy over undisclosed advertising in 2020, for which he issued an apology.
Kwon Sang-hyuk first started broadcasting as an AfreecaTV BJ in 2018, officially expanding his activities to YouTube in 2019. He successfully launched his own brand of french fries, 'Brishal Fry,' demonstrating considerable business acumen. Notably, he previously issued an apology in 2020 following controversy surrounding undisclosed sponsorships.
