Eugene Returns to Acting After 4 Years: 'Penthouse' Success Brought Pressure, But I'm Confident in My New Role
Actress Eugene has shared her feelings about returning to the small screen for the first time in four years since the hit drama series 'Penthouse'.
At the production presentation for MBN's new Wednesday-Thursday drama 'The First Lady,' held on the afternoon of the 24th, Eugene candidly spoke about the pressure she felt in choosing her next project.
'The First Lady' is a drama that unfolds around the unprecedented event of a husband, newly elected as president, demanding a divorce from his wife who is set to become the First Lady. In the series, Eugene takes on the role of Cha Soo-yeon, a kingmaker who helps an unknown activist become president.
She admitted, "The reason for the long hiatus after 'Penthouse' was the pressure regarding my next project." Eugene further explained, "Compared to my previous work, which featured many outstanding actors, this drama has fewer characters and a greater burden on me to carry the narrative. Early in filming, I realized portraying the character was more challenging than expected, which made me feel anxious."
However, Eugene expressed her growing confidence, stating, "As filming progressed, I became more accustomed to the role, and thanks to the trust from the director and my fellow actors, I gained confidence." She added, "While I'm still nervous and trembling before the premiere, I do worry if my portrayal of Cha Soo-yeon will be convincing and if she'll feel out of place. But this also signifies a new challenge that I've undertaken. I've prepared diligently and will approach it with confidence."
'The First Lady' is scheduled to premiere tonight at 10:20 PM.
Eugene debuted in 1997 as a member of the top girl group S.E.S. She transitioned to acting and earned critical acclaim for her roles in numerous hit dramas such as 'Wonderful Life,' 'King of Baking, Kim Takgu,' and 'A Tale of Two Sisters.' Her portrayal in the 'Penthouse' series garnered significant praise and popularity.
