A single line from the Disney+ original drama 'Jirisan' has reignited cross-border controversy, once again placing Korean content under scrutiny in China.

The dialogue, spoken by lead actress Gianna Jun – “Why does China prefer war? A nuclear bomb could fall on the border region.” – swiftly angered Chinese viewers who deemed it an insult to their nation. Consequently, several of Jun’s commercial endorsements, including those for cosmetics and luxury watches, have reportedly been withdrawn.

Professor Seo Kyoung-duk of Sungshin Women’s University commented that while viewers are entitled to express opinions, a contradiction exists: “Disney+ is unavailable in China, similar to Netflix. The fact that Chinese netizens are reacting implies they accessed it illegally, highlighting the irony of pirating content while criticizing it.”

Seo further stressed that objections should be directed at the drama’s producers or Disney+ itself, not the actress. He added, “As Korean content gains global traction, Chinese netizens seem increasingly anxious, seeking any avenue to target K-content.”

Gianna Jun, born Gianna Jun, is a South Korean actress and model. She rose to fame with the romantic comedy film 'My Sassy Girl' in 2001, becoming a household name across Asia. Her distinctive style and acting prowess have made her a sought-after endorser for luxury brands worldwide.
