Lee Gyeong-sil Defends Small Donations: 'Have You Even Donated Yourself?'
Broadcaster Lee Gyeong-sil has voiced her candid opinion regarding the criticism faced by celebrities for making small charitable donations.
In a YouTube video released on the channel 'Sinyeoseong' on the 23rd, Lee Gyeong-sil, alongside comedians Lee Seon-min and Jo Hye-ryun, discussed the topic of 'donations.' When asked by Lee Seon-min whether donations should be made secretly or publicly, Lee Gyeong-sil responded, 'Isn't the act of giving itself important?' highlighting the significance of the donation itself.
Jo Hye-ryun echoed this sentiment, emphasizing that the method of donation is less important than the act itself, citing singer Sean as an example. Jo Hye-ryun remarked, 'Sean ran 81.5 km in a marathon commemorating National Liberation Day. How incredible is that?' expressing admiration.
Addressing the recent trend of celebrities being criticized for the amount of their donations, Lee Gyeong-sil offered a sharp critique. She stated, 'Some people might donate a smaller amount,' and 'It's not like celebrities have to donate large sums.'
Furthermore, Lee Gyeong-sil strongly expressed her views by questioning the critics, saying, 'Have the people who say that ever donated themselves?' and 'Did you? I find that quite amusing.' This stance resonates with past instances where other celebrities faced backlash for small donations during national emergencies like the COVID-19 pandemic or natural disasters. Previously, Paikga from Koyote had also expressed his distress, stating, 'I was told, 'Other celebrities donated a lot, why did you only give that much?' It was very hurtful,' revealing the emotional toll of such situations.
Lee Gyeong-sil debuted in the broadcasting industry in the late 1980s and gained immense popularity through numerous sitcoms and variety shows. Known for her honest and bold remarks, she is often referred to as a 'godmother of variety shows' and is well-loved by the public. She continues to engage with audiences through various broadcasting activities, maintaining her enduring popularity.
