Actor Park Hee-soon shared his experience working with acclaimed director Park Chan-wook, expressing his surprise at the director's profound dedication to the Korean language.

During a recent interview discussing Park Chan-wook's new film 'Rebel Moon,' Park Hee-soon spoke about the director's meticulous approach. He revealed that despite being a globally recognized master filmmaker, he was greatly struck by Park Chan-wook's focus on enhancing the nuances and beauty of the Korean language, rather than solely concentrating on international appeal.

"Most of the directions were about our language. The pitch and tone, rhythm, making some sounds softer and others louder—I was incredibly shocked by his efforts to convey the melody and beauty of Korean," said Park Hee-soon, impressed by the director's commitment to linguistic expression even though the film would eventually have subtitles for international audiences.

Furthermore, Park Hee-soon noted that the director's prioritization of Korean viewers was also surprising. "He emphasizes the most fundamental aspects. Not mise-en-scène or cinematic techniques, but faithfulness to the actor's most basic tool: speech. I felt that this foundation is crucial for expanding cinematic imagination," he stated, expressing his deep respect for Park Chan-wook.

In addition, Park Hee-soon recounted an anecdote from the filming of 'Rebel Moon' during the December 3rd emergency martial law situation. He described witnessing Park Chan-wook sigh and drink whiskey, offering a glimpse into his human side and composed demeanor amidst the unfolding events.

Park Hee-soon debuted in the 1990 play 'The Crucible' and is a veteran actor. He has delivered memorable performances in numerous films, including 'The Witch: Part 1. The Subversion,' 'The Man Standing Next,' and 'Secret Sunshine.' Recognized for his solid acting skills across both theater and screen, he is particularly beloved by the public for his ability to portray weighty characters.
