Comedy Legend Jeon Yu-seong Passes Away at 76, Refused Life Support
Jeon Yu-seong, a towering figure in Korean comedy, often hailed as the 'godfather of comedy,' has passed away at the age of 76. He departed peacefully, having refused life support and after sharing heartfelt conversations with his daughter. His final moments were marked by the same understated humor that defined his career.
Singer Namkoong Ok-bun, who was with him in his final moments, shared that he had responded via KakaoTalk with a simple 'yes' until shortly before his passing, indicating his acceptance of his fate. Close friend and singer Yang Hee-eun expressed her deep sorrow, stating, "I never imagined that seeing him a few days ago would be our last. I couldn't keep our promise to go to a concert together."
His student, comedian Kim Dae-beom, remembered him as a mentor who always presented fresh comedy, wishing him a luminous journey through the heavens like a shooting star, mirroring his name. Fellow comedians honored him as a true comedian who never forgot to crack a joke, even in his final days. It's reported he even made a joke to Kim Hak-rae, president of the Korea Broadcasting Comedians Association, who visited him during his illness.
Jeon Yu-seong's health had rapidly declined following a COVID-19 infection during the pandemic, leading to acute pneumonia and arrhythmia. He had lost 16kg over the past few years due to his arduous battle with illness. Despite undergoing surgery for pneumothorax in July, he continued to experience breathing difficulties. His deteriorating health had led him to cancel his appearance at the Busan International Comedy Festival last month.
Even in his final moments, he maintained his characteristic wit and humor. Friends recall him as someone who always made people laugh. Jeon Yu-seong passed away on October 25th around 9:05 PM at Jeonbuk National University Hospital. His funeral parlor is located at Asan Medical Center in Seoul.
Born in the late 1940s, Jeon Yu-seong debuted in broadcasting in the 1970s and had a long and illustrious career as a comedian. Beyond his comedic talent, he was dedicated to nurturing younger talent and was beloved for his unique wit and charm. His passing is a significant loss to the Korean comedy scene, deeply felt by many.
