Comedy Icon Jeon Yu-seong's Final Farewell to be Honored by 'Gag Concert'

The legendary figure of Korean comedy, the late Jeon Yu-seong, has passed away at the age of 76 after a brief illness.

KBS's 'Gag Concert,' which shared a special bond with him, announced that prior to his funeral on the 28th, his remains will visit the KBS New Building to take a final look at the 'Gag Concert' meeting room and filming set.

The show will also dedicate a segment in its broadcast on the same day to commemorate the late comedian, honoring his significant contributions.

Jeon Yu-seong was instrumental in laying the foundation for Korean comedy by incorporating theatrical sensibilities into television from the 1970s. He is particularly renowned for popularizing the term 'gagman,' elevating the status of those who bring laughter. This was a pivotal moment in establishing comedy as a professional genre of cultural art.

Furthermore, he contributed to the launch and success of 'Gag Concert,' opening a new era for open comedy and paving the way for numerous junior comedians to become stars.

Jeon Yu-seong had been battling health issues since July, following surgery for pneumothorax. The condition recurred in both lungs, and despite treatment, his health deteriorated, leading to his passing at Jeonbuk National University Hospital.

Jeon Yu-seong began his career as a theater stage director in the 1970s before venturing into broadcast comedy, where he introduced a unique comedic style. He played a crucial role in popularizing the profession's title 'gagman' and enhancing the status of comedians. He is recognized for his immense contributions to Korean comedy, including his efforts in nurturing younger talent.
