
'Gag Concert' Mourns Passing of Comedy Pioneer Jeon Yoo-sung
KBS2's long-running comedy show 'Gag Concert' has paid tribute to the late Jeon Yoo-sung, widely regarded as a patriarch of Korean comedy.
On the 26th, 'Gag Concert' posted a message on its official social media account stating, "We pray for the soul of the late Jeon Yoo-sung, who coined the terms 'comedian' and 'comedienne' in Korea."
The esteemed comedian passed away on the 25th at the age of 76 due to worsening pleuritic symptoms. Born in 1949, Jeon Yoo-sung was more than just a comedian; he was a multifaceted talent who left an indelible mark as a broadcast writer, performance producer, and film director.
He is particularly credited with bridging the gap between intimate theater comedy and television broadcasts, significantly influencing the creation of shows like 'Gag Concert' and 'Gag Tonight'. Recognized as a key figure in the birth of 'Gag Concert,' he was honored as a "founding ancestor of Gag Concert" during its 1000th episode special, underscoring his profound impact.
Jeon Yoo-sung's funeral will be held under the auspices of the Comedians Association. His final resting place will be in Inwol-myeon, Namwon-si, Jeollabuk-do, where he had previously operated a noodle restaurant. The funeral procession is scheduled for 7 AM on the 28th, preceded by a memorial service at 6:30 AM. Following the procession, a final rite will be held at the 'Gag Concert' recording studio at KBS in Yeouido. The 'Gag Concert' program will dedicate a segment to mourning the late Jeon Yoo-sung during its broadcast on the 28th.
Jeon Yoo-sung entered the broadcasting industry in the early 1970s and gained immense popularity as a comedian. He pioneered the introduction of stand-up comedy, which was relatively unknown in Korea at the time, inspiring many junior comedians.
