
KBS's 'The Land of Rice Cakes' Returns to Showcase Korea's Culinary Heritage
KBS is set to premiere the fourth installment of its acclaimed 'The Land of Flavors' series, titled 'The Land of Rice Cakes' (Tteok). Following the successful explorations of broth, kimchi, and side dishes, this new series promises a richer and more immersive look into the world of Korean rice cakes.
'The Land of Rice Cakes' will be broadcast on KBS2 at 6:30 PM on October 6th and 7th. In Korean culture, 'tteok' often signifies good fortune and is considered a symbol of the best possible outcome, going beyond its status as mere food.
The special features renowned cartoonist Heo Young-man, actor Ryu Soo-young, and K-pop idol Mimi from OH MY GIRL. Part 1, 'White Rice, Hundred Flavors,' delves into the diverse forms of rice cakes made from white rice, exploring various ingredients that create a hundred different tastes and the intricate 'tteoksal' stamps used for delicate patterns. Unique varieties like 'Wageoppeong' made with lettuce and 'Neuttitteok' incorporating zelkova tree sprouts will be introduced.
Part 2, 'Rice Cake on Rice,' examines the regional characteristics of rice cakes and their historical significance as celebratory foods. Dishes such as the royal court's 'Duteoppeok,' 'Mangaetteok' from Uiryeong, and 'Gamjatteok' from Gangwon will be highlighted. Viewers will also discover that familiar foods like buckwheat jeonbyeong, bindaetteok, and hotteok are, in fact, types of tteok.
