Director Yeon Sang-ho has shared behind-the-scenes details about the production of his film 'The Face,' highlighting its remarkably low budget.

In an interview held on the 15th in Seoul, Director Yeon discussed how 'The Face' was completed with a budget of around 200 million Korean Won. He revealed that the film involved a crew of approximately 20 people, about a third of the staff for a typical commercial film, and was shot over just three weeks in 13 sessions.

When asked about the break-even point given the minimal budget, Director Yeon cautiously commented, "Our budget is so modest. However, we did have pre-sales." He then added with a chuckle, "To clear the debt I feel in my heart, I think we'd need to reach 10 million viewers."

He also spoke about actor Park Jeong-min's decision to forgo his salary for the project. "We had a proposed amount, and we agreed everyone would receive the same. I told him I'd make it seem like he got paid even if he didn't, but he insisted on not taking any," Yeon explained. He praised Park's dedication, noting, "Actor Park Jeong-min seems to have a lot of affection for the project, including for promotions. He recently went on YouTube without telling the PR team, and it seems he's putting in a lot of effort. But this only increases the debt I feel in my heart," he said, drawing laughter.

Director Yeon also shared his perspective on the Korean investment system, stating, "In Korea, the investment system tends to produce films by trying to reduce subjective opinions. I don't think that's the way to make good films. Films with distinct characteristics often have polarizing opinions. As the budget gets larger, those sharp edges tend to get smoothed out."

He concluded by expressing his vision for the future: "I believe we need to make films with sharp individuality. I think the theatrical system should also move towards strengthening unique characteristics, not just focusing on cost reduction and pleasing everyone. That's my thinking for the future of cinema."

Director Yeon Sang-ho is renowned for his unique storytelling and world-building, evident in hits like 'Train to Busan,' 'Peninsula,' and the Netflix series 'Hellbound.' His films often blend intense narratives with sharp social commentary. 'The Face' marks a shift for the director, exploring a more humanist narrative.
