BIFF Sparks Debate: Stars' Attitudes Draw Mixed Reactions
The 30th Busan International Film Festival (BIFF) has become a stage for contrasting attitudes among attending actors, leading to a polarized public response.
On the 19th, several events at the festival, held around the Busan Cinema Center, were marred by late arrivals due to traffic congestion. Actors Ha Jung-woo and Gong Hyo-jin, and Kim Dong-wook, who were scheduled for an open talk for their film 'People Upstairs,' arrived 15 minutes after the event was supposed to begin. Despite the MC citing traffic as the reason, the actors proceeded directly to discussing their film without any apology, disappointing the audience.
A similar situation unfolded later in the day. Veteran actress Youn Yuh-jung and director Andrew Ahn, present for the film 'Wedding Banquet,' also faced delays due to traffic. They joined the event without specific mention of their lateness, continuing the discussion initiated by newcomer Han Ki-chan.
Meanwhile, actor Lee Byung-hun was about 5 minutes late for his 'Actors' House' session due to traffic near the venue. The lack of any apologies or acknowledgments for the delays from these stars amplified the audience's disappointment.
In stark contrast, actress Son Ye-jin garnered significant praise for her sincere engagement with fans. On the 18th, during her 'Actors' House' session, Son Ye-jin openly shared her acting career journey, insights into married life with husband Hyun Bin, and her experiences with motherhood.
Notably, Son Ye-jin actively responded to fan comments on her social media. Addressing a question about bridging the gap between actors and characters, she explained, "The distance between a character and myself is always difficult and a subject of consideration." She also revealed, "The simple daily life I spend with my child and husband brings me the greatest happiness these days." When asked about directing, she expressed interest in potentially helming documentary or human drama films.
While some actors' tardiness at BIFF left attendees feeling let down, Son Ye-jin's genuine communication and commitment were met with applause. This year's festival highlighted how small gestures of sincerity can create a significant difference in public perception.
Ha Jung-woo is not only a celebrated actor but also an accomplished director, known for his versatility and directorial debut 'Fasten Your Seatbelt.' His artistic talents extend beyond filmmaking, as he has also held several solo exhibitions showcasing his work in painting. His continuous pursuit of new artistic challenges defines him as a multifaceted creative.
