Detectives showcased their meticulous investigation skills and unwavering determination to track down criminals in the latest episode of ‘Brave Detectives 4’.

Episode 56 of Teacast E Channel’s ‘Brave Detectives 4’ (directed by Lee Ji-seon), aired on the 31st of last month, featured Detective Superintendent Park Won-sik from Jungnang Police Station, Senior Inspector Lee Yun-hyung from Uijeongbu Police Station, and former Superintendent General Yoon Oe-chul and Inspector Kim Jin-soo from the Korean Criminal Science Investigation (KCSI), who unveiled their investigation logs.

The first case introduced involved a woman found deceased on a hiking trail. The report came in as an emergency dispatch: "A woman is collapsed on the hiking trail." The hiker who found the victim discovered her lying face down on a picnic mat in the woods, about 20 meters off the trail. Her top was pulled up and her lower garments were down. There were signs of her bag being rummaged through, and her wallet was missing. Crime scene analysis revealed an athletic shoe print next to the victim's hip, faint hand marks on her neck, and five strands of hair.

Although the crime scene was connected to a nearby mountain, expanding the suspect's escape routes, the investigative team meticulously examined CCTV footage from 6-7 entry points, conducting a thorough foot investigation. The victim, a woman in her 50s, died of suffocation, with no signs of sexual assault. One of the discovered hair strands was confirmed to belong to an unidentified male, but it wasn't enough to definitively identify the perpetrator. Given the concurrent string of violent crimes targeting women, the team decided a new approach was needed. They publicly disclosed the 'securing of hair strands from the scene' through the media, and within a day, a phone call came to the police station.

A man identifying himself as Choi Jung-sik (alias) called and confessed, asking, "What happened to that ajumma?" He surrendered as the net of investigation closed in. Upon his arrest, he claimed, "I only intended to steal money and didn't know she was dead." However, he shocked investigators when he was later captured on surveillance footage laughing while watching explicit videos on an illegal adult website shortly after the crime. His responses to lie detector questions regarding sexual offenses were all flagged as 'false.' He confessed to stealing 15,000 won from the victim and claimed he pressed down on her hip near the shoe print just to check the situation, enraging viewers. Choi was eventually sentenced to 25 years in prison.

The show then revealed the truth behind another brutal case, which could have been overlooked if not for a detective's persistent questioning. It began with a report of "A man smelling strongly of glue is wandering around." Responding officers encountered a man in his 30s exuding the scent of glue while carrying a black bag. His home appeared long-neglected and was in disarray. When asked about "family living together," he replied, "I went to prison four years ago, and my mother hasn't been around since then," adding that he didn't know when or why she left.

Detectives focused on the possibility of the mother's disappearance. Neighbors described her as being in her early 60s, living diligently by collecting waste paper despite a leg disability. She vanished in the winter four years prior, and her son had falsely claimed she went to her maternal relatives due to health issues. The missing person report was filed by the man's sister. Through their investigation, detectives uncovered evidence that the son had forced his mother to repay his card debts and even coerced her into taking out loans secured by her deposit. The detective sensed the high probability of the mother's death and resolved, on the day the son, imprisoned for glue inhalation, was being transferred, "I will reveal the truth about your mother's life or death before I retire from the police force."

The investigative team considered the possibility that a vehicle was used to transport the body. They confirmed that the man had borrowed a friend's car four years ago to visit his father's grave, but no direct evidence was found. However, armed with a warrant based on the lack of any prescription records for medication the mother needed after heart surgery, they summoned the man upon his release from prison. He eventually confessed in writing, "I killed my mother." He claimed the scolding, stemming from his glue inhalation, escalated into an argument about repaying debts. He stated he pushed his mother, causing her to fall on her buttocks, and she died the next day. He then confessed to moving the body in a friend's car to his father's burial site, but because the ground was frozen, he couldn't dig and ended up scattering the remains in a nearby reservoir, a revelation that shocked the viewers. However, as the body was never recovered, murder charges could not be applied. The man was convicted only of concealing a corpse and sentenced to one year in prison.

Netizens expressed outrage, commenting, 'Killing someone for money is unbelievable,' 'The sight of him laughing while watching adult films is chilling,' and 'Only a one-year sentence without even finding the body is too lenient,' highlighting their frustration with the perpetrator's shameless actions and the sentence.
