The EMK Musical Company (EMK) has heightened anticipation for its tenth original musical, 'The Man in the Hanbok,' by releasing its cast lineup. This production, a commemorative work for the 20th anniversary of Chungmu Arts Center, features a stellar ensemble poised to deliver a memorable performance.

Set to premiere on December 2nd at the Chungmu Arts Center Grand Theater, 'The Man in the Hanbok' promises a unique blend of European musical aesthetics and Korean sentiment. The story centers on Jang Yeong-sil, a genius inventor from the Joseon Dynasty, who defies societal limitations to pursue his dreams.

The musical intricately weaves history with imagination, presenting an original narrative that transcends time and space. The first act unfolds against the grandeur of Gyeongbokgung Palace's Geunjeongjeon in Joseon, while the second act transports audiences to the splendor of the European Renaissance, offering an experience akin to viewing two distinct performances.

This production aims to showcase a differentiated stage aesthetic by merging the visual appeal of K-historical dramas with the epic scope of European historical sagas. Furthermore, the casting of all roles as dual parts, portraying characters across different eras and locations, will add depth to the narrative by exploring societal contradictions and diverse human conditions, thereby enhancing audience immersion.

Park Eun-tae, Jeon Dong-seok, and Ko Eun-seong have been cast as Yeong-sil, the Joseon genius inventor, and Kang Bae, a modern-day scholar, highlighting the contrast between Yeong-sil's starlit aspirations and Kang Bae's reclusive scholarly pursuits.

Kai, Shin Sung-rok, and Lee Kyu-hyung will portray King Sejong, who championed the creation of Hangeul and scientific advancements for his people, and Jin Seok, a broadcast PD chasing the truth hidden in a memoir. Their performances will capture both Sejong's benevolence towards his subjects and Jin Seok's relentless pursuit of truth.

Min Young-ki and Choi Min-cheol will appear as Jeong Hwa-daejang, a navigator aiding Yeong-sil, and Professor Ma, who initially avoids but ultimately assists Kang Bae and Jin Seok. The cast also includes Kim Ju-ho, Kim Dae-ho, Lee Ji-su, Choi Ji-hye, Yoon Seon-yong, Park Hyung-gyu, Son Eui-wan, and Kim Yeon-jun, who will complete the multifaceted stage presentation.

Under the overall production of Uhm Hong-hyun, the musical features direction, book, and lyrics by Kwon Eun-a, known for her work on 'Mata Hari' and 'Mozart!'. The score and music direction are by Lee Sung-jun (Brandon Lee), acclaimed for 'Ben-Hur' and 'Frankenstein,' promising a blend of Korean and global melodies. Seo Sook-jin, renowned for her breathtaking stage designs in 'Mozart!' and 'Frankenstein,' will create a visually captivating spectacle.

'The Man in the Hanbok' is scheduled to open on December 2nd at the Chungmu Arts Center Grand Theater in Seoul.

As EMK's tenth original musical production, 'The Man in the Hanbok' carries significant expectations, following the company's track record of successful shows like 'Mozart!,' 'Elizabeth,' and 'The Man Who Laughs.' The musical distinguishes itself by moving beyond a mere historical portrayal, aiming for a unique narrative that infuses Korean sentiment with imagination that transcends time and space. It is anticipated to offer audiences a profound emotional experience and a unique artistic journey through the harmonious fusion of sophisticated European musical theater aesthetics and the resonant emotionality of K-musicals.
