Ok Joo-hyun Addresses Controversy Over Alleged Illegal Operation of Agency
Musical actress Ok Joo-hyun, formerly of the group Fin.K.L., is once again facing controversy, this time regarding the alleged illegal operation of her agency, TOI Entertainment.
Reports surfaced that the agency, established by Ok Joo-hyun in April 2022 and also housing her close junior, musical actress Lee Ji-hye, was not registered as a cultural and artistic planning business. Under the Development of the Cultural and Artistic Industry Act, entertainers operating as sole proprietors with one or more employees are required to register. Failure to do so can result in imprisonment or fines, and all business activities, including contract signings, are considered illegal.
Ok Joo-hyun's agency acknowledged the oversight, stating, "It is our clear fault that we did not complete the registration for the cultural and artistic planning business in a timely manner. However, we want to clarify that we never intentionally evaded legal procedures or operated the company illegally." They explained that a procedural oversight occurred during the registration process, which began three years ago, and they are currently confirming the cause and will immediately complete the registration.
Despite the explanation, public sentiment remains mixed, with some netizens expressing disappointment over a perceived lack of responsibility and recalling past controversies, such as the "Ok-Jang-pan" incident. Ok Joo-hyun is currently performing in the musical 'Marie Curie' and is also slated to appear in 'Red Book'.
Ok Joo-hyun is renowned for her powerful vocals and stage presence, both as a member of the iconic K-pop group Fin.K.L. and as a leading musical theater actress. She is known for her exceptional acting skills and strong ticket-selling power, consistently headlining major productions. Her transition from idol singer to acclaimed musical actress is considered one of the most successful in Korean entertainment.
