MBC has announced the abolition of its freelance weathercaster system and the introduction of a new, regular-hired 'Meteorological and Climate Specialist' system. This decision comes as the broadcasting station marks the first anniversary of the passing of former weathercaster Oh Yo-an-na, who died due to workplace harassment.

In a press release on the 15th, MBC offered condolences to Oh Yo-an-na's bereaved family and prayed for her repose. The company stated its commitment to reforming its weather reporting practices.

The newly established 'Meteorological and Climate Specialist' role will encompass not only traditional weathercasting duties but also reporting, program appearances, and content production, aiming to deliver more professional weather and climate information to viewers.

Recruitment for these specialist positions is slated for late this year or early next year via public hiring. Eligibility requires a major in meteorology, climate, or environmental science, relevant certifications, or at least five years of industry experience, with existing freelance weathercasters also encouraged to apply.

Regarding the civil lawsuit with Oh Yo-an-na's family, MBC stated that if mutual consent is reached between the parties, the results of the internal fact-finding committee's investigation will be disclosed.

Oh Yo-an-na joined MBC in 2021 and worked as a weathercaster. Tragically, she passed away in September 2023, following revelations of severe workplace bullying. Her death brought significant attention to the issues faced by freelance employees in the broadcasting industry. Her legacy serves as a catalyst for systemic change within MBC's employment structure.
