The Disney+ original series 'Polaris,' starring top actress Jun Ji-hyun, has become embroiled in an unexpected controversy following backlash from Chinese netizens over a specific line of dialogue.

According to Hong Kong's Sing Tao Daily and other local media, a scene featuring Jun Ji-hyun saying, "Why does China prefer war? Nuclear bombs could fall on border areas," has been circulating on Chinese social media.

Chinese netizens are criticizing the line for allegedly distorting China's image and being divorced from reality, leading to calls for a boycott. Further accusations include the intentional portrayal of Dalian as dilapidated by filming scenes in Hong Kong's squatter areas, stepping on a five-star carpet, and having a villain speak Chinese, all deemed as 'demeaning China.'

The controversy has extended to Jun Ji-hyun personally, with reports indicating that some cosmetic and watch brands for which she is an endorser have removed their advertisements in China. The situation has escalated to the point where some netizens are advocating for a stricter reinforcement of the past 'Han-ryu Ban' (Korean Wave restriction order).

Ironically, 'Polaris' is experiencing significant success, particularly in South Korea and across the Asia-Pacific region. Disney+ announced that the series became the most-watched Korean original title released in 2025 within just five days of its debut.

Jun Ji-hyun gained widespread fame across Asia with her role in the 2001 film 'My Sassy Girl,' establishing herself as a top Hallyu star. She is recognized as a timeless melodrama queen and style icon, celebrated for her unique visuals and outstanding acting skills. In recent years, she has expanded her acting repertoire through diverse genres, including 'Jirisan' and 'Kingdom: Ashin of the North.'
