At the opening ceremony of the 30th Busan International Film Festival (BIFF) held on October 17th, acclaimed director Chung Ji-young was presented with the Lifetime Achievement Award in recognition of his significant contributions to Korean cinema.

BIFF Chairman Park Kwang-su introduced Director Chung as a "cinematic force who, even at 79, continues to work on post-production for his new film, demonstrating unwavering passion." Director Chung is renowned for films such as 'The Attorney' (formerly 'Broken Arrow'), 'National Security' (formerly 'Namyeong-dong 1985'), 'Black Money', and 'The Boys', which have critically examined societal issues and resonated deeply with audiences.

Accepting the award, Director Chung humbly stated, "For 50 years of my cinematic life, I have lived a life communicating with audiences through the lens of the camera." He added, "This award is not just for me, but accepted on behalf of the many colleagues, juniors, and seniors who fought alongside me." He recalled navigating challenging periods in the film industry, including censorship during military dictatorships, the dominance of Hollywood, and the monopolistic practices of large corporations.

Director Chung further remarked, "While Korean cinema is currently facing challenges, much like the new waves of the Busan sea, Korean filmmakers are always preparing new and powerful films." He urged the audience to seek out and enjoy the hidden gems of Korean cinema, leaving attendees with a profound sense of emotion and hope for the future of the industry.

The 30th Busan International Film Festival will run until October 26th at the Busan Cinema Center and surrounding areas.

His films often challenge societal taboos, providing audiences with opportunities for deep reflection. His career began in the 1970s, and he continues to be actively involved in filmmaking with unyielding passion.
