Director Lee Jong-beom has addressed the criticism he faced upon joining the JTBC variety show 'Strong Baseball,' asserting his commitment to a new challenge.

In an interview with the production team broadcast on the 22nd, Lee stated, "I went through a bit of a tough time. It wasn't an easy decision." He acknowledged that after 32 years in professional baseball, some fans might have felt disappointed by his shift in direction, expressing his apologies for that sentiment.

Back in June, 'Strong Baseball' announced the appointment of Lee Jong-beom, then a coach for the KT Wiz, as the new season's director. This move stirred the industry, as concerns were raised about his decision to leave his professional coaching post mid-season to lead a baseball entertainment program. Some criticized it as turning his back on the professional stage and treating baseball as mere entertainment.

Lee explained, "I was well aware that I might face a lot of backlash for accepting the director role at 'Strong Baseball.' If I had only wanted the position itself, I wouldn't have chosen 'Strong Baseball.' I believe that revitalizing 'Strong Baseball' can significantly boost the popularity of Korean baseball. Moreover, the newly launched 'Strong Baseball' has pledged support for amateur baseball, including youth leagues."

He further emphasized his belief that 'Strong Baseball' is a program where baseball is treated with sincerity, despite being an entertainment show. He noted that all participants were former professional athletes with pride and dignity in their careers, and promised to strive for a passionate and genuine display of baseball.

The new season of 'Strong Baseball,' helmed by Director Lee Jong-beom amidst mixed reactions, finally premiered on the 22nd. Legendary baseball figure Kim Eung-yong, former national team director, showed his support, humorously remarking to Lee, Jang Sung-ho, and Shim Soo-chang, "Aren't you guys still in your prime for playing? Coaching is for people like me." Kim also offered Lee advice, saying, "It's okay to be criticized. I've learned that life is about enjoyment. If you enjoy what you do, it's all good. People who get criticized a lot live long lives."

Dubbed the 'Son of the Wind,' Lee Jong-beom is a former player and coach who left an indelible mark on Korean professional baseball history. His exceptional batting skills and baseball acumen earned him widespread admiration. After retiring as a player, he continued his career in coaching, contributing to the development of Korean baseball. His current role in 'Strong Baseball' marks a significant new chapter as a director, generating considerable interest among fans.
