Man Caring for Mother with Intellectual Disability Seeks Marriage Advice on 'Ask Us Anything Fortune'
A 39-year-old man, who has been caring for his mother with an intellectual disability, shared his heartfelt concerns about dating and marriage on the latest episode of KBS Joy's 'Ask Us Anything Fortune' (episode 337).
He explained that his mother acquired her disability around middle school, and tragically, his father passed away when he was 15. With his grandmother also deceased, he is now the sole caregiver for his mother, stating, 'To my mother, I am everything.'
When MC Lee Soo-geun asked if he had given up opportunities to date, the man confessed, 'I often couldn't even try because I envisioned the difficult situation of caring for my mother together in the future.' He added that his last relationship was about 10 years ago.
Seo Jang-hoon advised, 'It seems like you're not trying for your mother's sake, but rather that you're not trying at all. You need to meet someone who truly likes you and has the heart to care for her because of you.' Lee Soo-geun added, 'You must love yourself as much as you love your mother, otherwise, you might feel empty later.' He also playfully warned against seeking quick encounters online.
Both hosts emphasized the importance of building a financial foundation to provide the best care for his mother and that now is not the time for self-pity. They encouraged him to create conditions that would allow him to live a fulfilling life, even after marriage, while continuing to support his mother.
Korean netizens expressed admiration for his filial piety, with comments like 'He's so devoted to his mother' and 'I hope he finds happiness for himself too, so he doesn't regret it later.' Many also resonated with the realistic advice, saying, 'The advice given felt very practical' and 'I hope he meets someone who can embrace his situation and care for his mother together after marriage.'
