South Korean singer Psy (real name Park Jae-sang) is facing a police investigation for allegedly receiving sleep medication, a psychotropic drug, through proxy without proper medical consultation.

An official from the Seoul Metropolitan Police Agency announced on the 8th that Psy will be summoned for questioning soon regarding the allegations. Police are investigating claims that Psy received prescriptions for psychotropic drugs from a university hospital in Seoul between 2022 and recently, without in-person consultations, and had them picked up by his manager or other third parties. Authorities have already searched the hospital to secure relevant medical records and are currently analyzing seized items and investigating involved individuals.

In response to the growing controversy, Psy's agency admitted that the proxy receipt of prescription sleep medication was a "clear mistake and oversight." However, they asserted that he had been taking the prescribed dosage under medical guidance and denied any proxy prescriptions, clarifying that a third party had received the medication on his behalf. Despite the agency's explanation, the case has sparked debate about the line between "proxy prescription" and "proxy receipt," as current medical law limits medication prescription to the patient or a designated proxy.

The Korean Medical Association emphasized that this is a "serious matter that can affect public safety, not just a personal issue, given his status as a celebrity," urging a thorough investigation. Police plan to determine whether to charge both Psy and the prescribing doctor with violations of the Medical Service Act after further inquiry.

Psy, born Park Jae-sang, debuted in 2001 and is a renowned South Korean singer, songwriter, and record producer.

He gained global fame with hit songs such as 'Gangnam Style,' 'Champion,' and 'Love Story.'
