Netflix Shines Bright at 30th Busan International Film Festival with 9 Diverse Titles
The Busan International Film Festival (BIFF), celebrating its 30th anniversary, is once again showcasing its deep-rooted partnership with global streaming giant Netflix. This collaboration, which began in 2018, has become an indispensable element of the prestigious festival. Following the buzz generated by Netflix's 'Jeon, Ran' as last year's opening film, this year's lineup boasts an impressive nine Netflix productions, spanning various genres and nationalities.
Korean cinema takes center stage with Byun Sung-hyun's 'Good News', marking its return to the Gala Presentation section after seven years, and Kim Byung-woo's 'The Great Flood', set for its premiere in the 'Korean Cinema Today - Special Premiere' section. The 'On Screen' section will feature the Korean series 'You Have Killed', along with Japanese series 'Romantic Anonymous' and 'Ikusagami: War God', and the Taiwanese series 'The Ghost Bride'.
The festival also promises a treat for international film enthusiasts with new works from acclaimed directors. Guillermo del Toro brings his adaptation of Mary Shelley’s classic, 'Frankenstein', while Noah Baumbach premieres 'Jay Kelly', and Kathryn Bigelow presents 'House of Dynamite'. A star-studded cast including Seol Kyung-gu, Hong Kyung, Kim Da-mi, Park Hae-soo, Jeon So-nee, Lee Yoo-mi from Korea, and international stars like Oguri Shun, Han Hyo-joo, Okada Junichi, Fujisaki Yumiami, Shu Qi, and Lee Sinje are expected to grace Busan, drawing immense global attention.
A BIFF official clarified, "It's not special because it's Netflix; we simply recognize them as a platform that consistently produces good content." Netflix reciprocated, stating, "It's incredibly special and meaningful to showcase works from top creators and actors, both domestic and international, at Asia's premier film festival, especially as we celebrate its 30th anniversary."
