NCT WISH Member Ryo Sparks Controversy Over 'Sea of Japan' Remark on Radio
NCT WISH member Ryo has found himself at the center of a controversy after referring to the East Sea as the 'Sea of Japan' during a Japanese radio broadcast.
The incident occurred on the April 4th episode of the Japanese radio show 'CHAT WITH WISH.' While discussing Fukui Prefecture, Ryo made a comment about the deliciousness of crab from the 'Sea of Japan.' This statement quickly drew criticism from South Korean netizens, as the body of water is known as the East Sea in Korea.
Following the rapid spread of the clip on social media, a debate has erupted among fans. Some netizens criticized Ryo for a lack of historical awareness, suggesting educational intervention. Conversely, others defended the idol, arguing that his remark stemmed from the way the sea is taught in Japan and lacked any malicious intent, deeming the backlash excessive.
NCT WISH, an SM Entertainment group that debuted in February 2024, is a six-member unit. With four Japanese members—Riku, Sion, Ryo, and Sakuya (note: Sion is Korean, Riku, Ryo, and Sakuya are Japanese, along with Yushi and Riku)—the group is focused on activities within Japan.
Ryo is a vocalist and dancer in NCT WISH, known for his energetic stage presence. He is one of the younger members of the group and is cherished by fans for his bright personality. As a native of Japan, Ryo plays a key role in facilitating communication in Japanese and understanding local cultural nuances for the group.
