Son Dam-bi Recalls Emotional Toll of IVF: "Mentally Draining"
Singer and actress Son Dam-bi has candidly shared the emotional and physical challenges she faced during her IVF (In Vitro Fertilization) journey.
Appearing on the MBN variety show ‘Let’s Go’ Season 5 alongside friends Ayumi and Lee Eun-hyung, Son Dam-bi discussed her experiences with trying to conceive.
She revealed, "Even with exercise, it wasn't happening easily. I worried it might be infertility and went to the hospital, where my levels came back low." She added, "My husband (Lee Gyu-hyuk) was also tested and turned out to be a 'sperm king'. I hadn't considered that it wouldn't work, so it was upsetting. We immediately started IVF."
When asked about the difficulty of IVF, Son Dam-bi admitted, "It was mentally draining. My hormones were all over the place, and I even received calls about failed pregnancies." She continued, "Initially, my count was only 0.2. The doctor said it would be difficult to conceive if I was too underweight, so I gained some weight and then I became pregnant." She concluded with tears welling up, "When I went for my blood test and was told I was pregnant because the numbers were high, my husband and I both cried a lot. The first attempt had failed."
Son Dam-bi, born in 1983, debuted as a solo artist in 2007 before transitioning into acting, appearing in various dramas and films. She married former speed skating national athlete Lee Gyu-hyuk in 2022.
