Son Ye-jin Recalls First BIFF Memories: 'Dress and Diet' Struggles, Lee Byung-hun's Admiration

Actress Son Ye-jin has opened up about her first experiences at the 30th Busan International Film Festival (BIFF), sharing candid memories of the event.

During the 'Son Ye-jin's Act House' session held on the afternoon of October 18th at the Shinhan Card Hall of Dongseo University's Sohyang Theater, the star discussed her filmography with Baek Eun-ha, director of the Actor's Research Institute.

Son Ye-jin, who debuted in commercials in 1999, also starred in the opening film of the 30th BIFF, 'The Cruel Sea' (directed by Park Chan-wook), adding a special touch to her festival involvement.

When asked about her earliest memory of BIFF, Son Ye-jin humorously confessed, "Honestly, I don't remember the first time. I only remember the dress. What dress to wear, how much diet I needed, and how low-cut it should be – that was very important." She added, "All actresses go through a harsh diet before the festival. It's the same for every female star. I remember wearing a very voluminous dress and walking the red carpet one by one."

She recalled, "It was probably in my late twenties. I didn't have a special film that year, but I remember just attending. I recall walking the red carpet with other actors, wearing a fluffy dress."

Lee Byung-hun, her co-star in 'The Cruel Sea,' was reportedly amazed by Son Ye-jin's dedication to her physical condition. Director Baek stated, "Actor Lee Byung-hun expressed his admiration for how Son Ye-jin prepared her body, asking if she was an athlete or an actress. He felt a profound professionalism beyond mere beauty."

Son Ye-jin responded with a laugh, "I train my body to an almost torturous level."

She also shared a recent anecdote: "Yesterday, after the opening ceremony, I got back to my hotel at midnight. I quickly ordered room service and fell asleep right after eating," revealing the demanding schedule of the festival.

Son Ye-jin participated in 'Son Ye-jin's Act House' at the 30th Busan International Film Festival in 2024. Her acting career began after her debut as a commercial model in 1999. She is married to actor Hyun Bin and they welcomed their son in June 2022.
