Director Park Chan-wook's latest film, 'The Substitute,' which garnered significant attention at the Venice Film Festival, is set to continue its wave of excitement at the Busan International Film Festival (BIFF) starting October 17th. The movie tells the story of Mansu, a laid-off office worker preparing for re-employment, and has already received a remarkable 10-minute standing ovation from audiences at its world premiere in Venice.

Although 'The Substitute' was a strong contender in the competition category at Venice, it ultimately did not secure an award. Nevertheless, its successful premiere highlighted the film's exceptional quality and has amplified anticipation for its domestic release and upcoming screening at BIFF. The film's journey doesn't stop there, as it will represent Korean cinema at the upcoming Academy Awards in the International Feature Film category.

This year's BIFF will feature lead actor Lee Byung-hun as the opening ceremony host and a guest at the Actors' House, while co-star Son Ye-jin will also engage with fans at the Actors' House to reflect on her acting career. Jung Han-seok, the festival's Executive Programmer, expressed his hope that 'The Substitute' will serve as a catalyst for increased interest in Korean cinema.

The Korean Film Council selected 'The Substitute' as the country's official submission for the Academy Awards, citing its outstanding artistic merit and the superb performances by its cast. This nomination is seen as a much-needed boost for the Korean film industry, which has been facing a downturn.

Director Park Chan-wook is renowned globally for his distinctive directorial style and visual artistry. His films often delve deeply into the human psyche, leaving a powerful impact on viewers. He first gained widespread recognition with 'Joint Security Area' in 2002 and has since delivered numerous masterpieces like 'Oldboy,' 'The Handmaiden,' and 'Decision to Leave.'
