Director Jang Young-seok: 'Try' Cast Was Irreplaceable, Grateful for 'Stove League' Comparisons
SBS’s Friday-Saturday drama 'Try: We Become a Miracle' ('Try') has concluded its run to widespread acclaim, drawing comparisons to the hit series 'Stove League'. Director Jang Young-seok expressed his heartfelt gratitude to the cast and viewers in a recent written interview with OSEN.
Director Jang praised the ensemble, stating, "I can confidently say it was the best combination, the best team. Actors Yoon Kye-sang, Im Se-mi, and Kim Yo-han, along with every other cast member, delivered performances that were truly irreplaceable and excellent. Every moment we spent together was precious and I am thankful."
Addressing the 'Stove League' comparisons, he admitted, "As a fan of 'Stove League,' I never imagined such a reaction during the production phase." However, he acknowledged, "I could feel the audience's strong desire for 'sports genres' and 'growth narratives.'"
'Try' depicted the comedic growth journey of the Hanyang University High School rugby team, consistently at the bottom, as they strive for the national championship under their eccentric coach, played by Yoon Kye-sang. The series achieved a peak viewership rating of 7.9% and concluded on a high note.
"I am grateful to all the viewers who watched and cherished our drama," Director Jang conveyed. "Though imperfect, I hope it remains a memorable drama for many. Personally, it feels like I’ve graduated from somewhere, much like the 'Hanyang High Schoolers' have. It's both liberating and bittersweet. All the feedback, whether criticism or encouragement, is something I gratefully accept."
He further elaborated on Yoon Kye-sang's portrayal of Coach Joo Ga-ram, noting, "The character Joo Ga-ram might seem inconsistent at first glance. It was actor Yoon Kye-sang's power that pieced those aspects together to create a three-dimensional character." The director highlighted their extensive discussions regarding the character's relationship with Bae I-ji (Im Se-mi) and his illness, ultimately satisfied with the results achieved through collaborative ideas.
Director Jang Young-seok has earned praise for his direction of SBS’s 'Try: We Become a Miracle,' successfully blending sports drama with compelling coming-of-age themes. He is noted for fostering strong chemistry among the cast, which translated effectively onto the screen. His thoughtful approach to sensitive subject matter and unique storytelling has solidified his reputation as a director with a keen eye for character development and narrative depth.
