Kim Da-mi Tackles Motherhood in Netflix's 'The Great Flood', Shares Challenges

Actress Kim Da-mi is stepping into new territory by portraying a mother in the upcoming Netflix film 'The Great Flood'.

At an outdoor stage greeting for the film, held on the evening of October 19th at the Busan Cinema Center as part of the 30th Busan International Film Festival, Kim Da-mi and director Kim Byeong-woo discussed their new project.

Kim Da-mi opened up about the difficulties of playing a mother, an experience she hasn't personally had. "Portraying a mother and maternal love was challenging because it's something I haven't experienced," she shared. "However, I made an effort to spend a lot of time with the child actor on set, trying to be like a mother and son."

She continued, praising her young co-star: "The child actor also worked very hard. It must have been really tough, especially in the cold, but I want to say their role in the movie is truly amazing."

Director Kim Byeong-woo explained his casting choice, noting, "Honestly, I initially didn't consider the actress's age. I thought it might be good for an actress around 40 to play the role, given the child is about five or six years old. However, when thinking about who would portray the character more fittingly, I believed an actress who might make people question, 'Is she really a mother?' would express the character more accurately."

He further elaborated on Kim Da-mi's versatility: "Actress Kim Da-mi portrays completely different characters in vastly different ways in every project. While some actors consistently stick to a similar color, she is always embarking on something new. Ultimately, she has to express it through her acting, and I believe she holds onto every detail without missing anything."

Kim Da-mi added about her initial reaction to the script: "At first, I thought it would be difficult. I couldn't imagine how the script would be realized. I wondered if it could be implemented. But with the mindset of challenging myself despite the difficulty, I took on the role."

'The Great Flood' is an SF disaster blockbuster depicting the struggle for survival by those risking humanity's last hope on the final day of Earth, submerged by a massive flood, as they battle within a water-filled apartment. The film is set to premiere on Netflix on December 19th.

Kim Da-mi gained significant attention for her role in the 2018 film 'The Witch: Part 1. The Subversion', quickly establishing herself as a rising star in Korean cinema. She further solidified her status with successful dramas like 'Itaewon Class' and 'Our Beloved Summer', showcasing a wide acting range. 'The Great Flood' marks her first foray into the science fiction genre and her debut in a Netflix original film, generating considerable anticipation among fans.
